This project was proposed for a specific exhibition space in Museum of Contemparory Art Taipei, Taiwan.

Visual Presentation

7 color images(each 160*288cm) of nameless gravestones in modern western style are fised on the 3 walls(exept for the entrance side).

White elastic fabric covers the whole exhibition room with a 40 cm distance from the ground. Under the elastic fabric, several projectors are running.

While participants step bare-footedly into the space, they make the elastic touch to the ground, as the projection meets a "temporary" screen, the erased texts from the images on the wall appear.

At the same time, a sound work plays: a low tone of a woman and a man read unfamiliar texts in turn.

Concept Notes

The project is planned in a context of Taiwanese culture. For my people, the modern western style gravestones and the sound are identifiable but indiffiated. A distance is created to make viewers stand in a outsider position, the other, to feel the aura of the site. The Museum was once a government office during the period of Japan Occupation for 50 years in early 20th century.

After another ruling party, KMD, landed on Taiwan, the building functions as an elementary school. In recent years it reforms to a museum. Its historical aspects are distant for a young generation like my age. As time past by, memory fragiles and sometimes becomes difficult to identify.

I am "the other" just because time changes. Nothing really takes place right in front of me, I am with a sense of disgrace and shame for my poor knowledge of my motherlands.

Awareness of unknown past and reflection on our current situation.
